Living Movement

There’s a little Unitarian Universalist fellowship not far from where we live. I drive by it almost every day. If you’re not familiar with this religion, their core identity is to reject the Trinity and to reject that Jesus is the only way to God — so they’re “Unitarian” (not Trinitarian), and they’re universalists (not Jesus-exclusivists).

But they meet weekly, in a quaint little building, up on a hill with a nicely mowed lawn. It looks very charming.

And when I drive past it I wonder sometimes:

  • Do they get crowded on Sundays?

  • Do they want more people to be part of their ‘church’?

  • Is there any desire for growth, and multiplication, and advance?

But then again, why would they want these things? Because according to their teaching … God is basically whatever you want him to be; Jesus was only a historical figure; and there’s no such thing as hell.

They are compelled by their theology to stay right where they are. How does our theology compel us?

My exhortation this morning is to remember that we have a living Savior who leads a living movement.

Prayer of Confession

Father in heaven, this morning we confess that often we are so busied by the cares of life that we lose sight of ultimate reality. We are so full of good things that sometimes we can forget the main things. And for this, we ask that you forgive us.

Father, forgive us for any and all forgetfulness, and please freshly fix our hearts on the fact of Jesus, on the certainty of hell, and on the only news in the world that is ultimately good news in the fullest sense. Father, defend us against error, in faith and practice, and please guide us in your truth, even now as we confess our individual sins to you in this time of silence…
