Jesus + Coffee

“This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
– Psalm 118:24

It’s day 23,892,341 of social distancing. Or at least it feels that way. The days can start to blend together and seem like they are dragging, which can make it hard to feel like Psalm 118:24 is truth. There are things that overwhelm our minds: fear of illness, worries about providing for our family, anxiety about filling the day with meaningful activities, and so much more.

When that alarm clock goes off each morning, I sometimes have to triple check what day of the week it is (and truthfully, sometimes I am very wrong). Spending time in the word is an amazing way to reground myself in God’s promises, in the good times and the COVID-times.

But sometimes, you also need a little caffeine.

It’s easy to miss your favorite latte from Caribou or that nitro cold brew from Starbucks — not to mention the amazing drinks from the local coffee spots throughout the Twin Cities. And maybe you have a Nespresso at home or love your French press but need a little something different.

Enter: Dalgona Coffee. Also known as whipped coffee or magic coffee, this is the perfect drink to dazzle your tastebuds and get those brain juices flowing each morning! Plus, it’s cheap and easy to make and could be your new go-to. It is definitely mine!

You’ve probably seen it make the rounds on social media. It went viral on TikTok and has been taking over Instagram and Facebook, because, well, it’s beautiful:

It’s so easy. All you need is:

  1. Hot water

  2. Sugar

  3. Instant coffee

  4. Milk (+ ice)

Seriously.

You take equal parts hot water, sugar and instant coffee, and put it in a bowl or cup. Most people will do 2 TBSP. It makes a good amount of whipped coffee that can easily be split into two drinks or used to make one super drink. If you are using a hand-mixer, I would recommend a cup because it will splatter as it mixes.

Then whip it. Some choose to hand whip while others rely on hand-mixers. Either way, as you start to whip, the mixture will thicken and start to lighten in color.

Soon, you will have a nice, thick caramel-y looking mixture that’s almost ready for consumption! (the photos below show a runnier mixture, which is fine!)

If you keep whipping, you can get it even thicker, giving you that cloud-like look. To ensure a very thick whipped coffee, go the hand whisking way.

The last thing you’ll need is a glass of milk with ice! Glass is best because you can see the beautiful coffee creation you have made. You can use any kind of milk: regular, soy, oat, almond — anything that floats your boat. I have discovered that whole milk is definitely the tastiest, but this drink works with whatever you want.

Then, spoon the whipped coffee mixture on top of the milk. If your mixture is a little runnier, it will look something like this:

And if your mixture is thicker, it will look more like this:

You may be wondering: did Phyllis take photos of her dalgona coffee on two different days? The answer is yes, yes I did. Because I am obsessed with this and make it almost every morning. It is just that good. I do use decaf instant coffee because otherwise I would be a jittery hot mess.

Last step, mix it up. Okay, before that, take a bunch of pictures and proudly post it on social media because it is a beautiful thing that you made! Then make sure to mix it. The whipped coffee mixture on its own will still be a little bitter, very reminiscent of instant coffee. When mixed, however, the drink takes on an incredible flavor that reminds me of a caramel macchiato from Starbucks.

Some tips after experimenting for a few weeks!

  • If the end result is too sweet, reduce the amount of sugar.

  • If you want really thick whipped coffee, use a hand whisk and don’t give up!

  • If the whipped coffee isn’t your ideal consistency, don’t be sad! It will still taste delish.

  • The standard 2 TBSP amount will make quite a bit, so if you want it less strong, use less of the whipped coffee!

Seriously, God’s word is enough encouragement and gives us hope in the most trying of times. Coffee is just an added bonus.
